It has been said that religion is the opium of nations. Is this what is happening in Egypt and the Middle East lately?
The new Egyptian government led by Dr. Morsy and the Muslim brotherhood has been criticized for not planning for Egypt's progress. Egyptians are waiting longer for their daily needs from traffic to gas to bread. Add to this, the many good students cannot get in a decent college this year. Fostering hate towards the outside world or towards each other just like Muslim vs. Copts, Egyptians vs. Israeli, now Egyptians and Arabs vs. Americans will be an old failing practice but it works for a few days.
Instead of Egyptians going out to demonstrate against the ruling government for failing to deliver the promises of the goals and objectives of the revolution, a lot of the young hungry people are directing their frustration against the American Embassy, their staff and their buildings.
Hatemongering brings nothing but hate. A knowledgeable president who guides the people with his prayers and speeches should have emphasized the rule of law. Not only that, Dr. Morsy on his CV obtained his PHD and worked in the United States of America. First thing we all learn in living in the US is that the government does not control people , only laws do, and all are equal in front of the law. When there is a bad trashy movie, we can lobby to block it from being viewed which happened before by the Israeli lobby and some Christian groups" Hence the importance of Arab Lobby in the US", we can also take them to court for inciting hate in the US and the rest of the world. Better yet Muslim Egyptians and Muslim Arabs and non-Arabs can take them to court for putting our lives in danger.
Many possible ways to fight such a trashy insignificant movie, none of them accepts or suggests violence and the killing of the innocents. When we kill an innocent man we do nothing but reinforce the views of the few that our society and our people do not know how to practice democracy, how to respect the law and how to be a civilized society.
Did Dr. Morsy and his government deliberately ignore the situation letting the Salafies call for a demonstration in front of the American Embassy while Egyptian emotions are charged with protection to Islam?
Was Dr. Morsy deliberately vague in his speech and deliberately disrespectful to president Obama calling him with first name? Was Dr. Morsy ill advised to not acknowledge the sorrow and pain of all Americans including us American Egyptians for the loss of a great Ambassador who in particular is a friend of the Arabs and the Libyans?
Was Dr. Morsy playing politics with his own audience at the expense of the International etiquette and protocol or was that lack of knowledge or ill advice?
Are we deliberately pushing the United States of America to down grade Egypt from a friend to not an enemy? Can we afford this status at this time? What would Egypt benefit from throwing the US right in the arms of Israel with no limitations because we could not keep a friend?
As long as no one has a vision or a strategic plan for Egypt, does anyone really know where Egypt is going with this slippery slope approach? The only thing we know for sure is the example of what we see in front of us. India and Pakistan were established the same day. India took the peaceful route, Religion is for God and Country is for all. By the way India has many religions. Now they sent stations to space, are leading in industry and technology.
Pakistan which got stuck with the religion and hate route is a broken society, nothing else but a nuclear bomb with poverty and corruption and daily bombs killing innocent people.
If Egypt does not stay on the revolution route with its goals and objectives, I am afraid we will be slipping into a deep slope which will be very hard to walk on.
God bless Egypt, God bless and guide Egyptians.
Samia Harris.
