"The June 1967 War and the Palestinian Refugee Problem."
It has been 46 years since the Six Day War of June 5-10, 1967 -- also called June War or al-Naksa (the Setback). Israel's decisive victory captured the Sinai Peninsula, Gaza Strip, West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights and marked an immense political event in the Arab-Israeli conflict. The war was launched by Israel against the neighboring states of Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. Within six days, Israel had won a land war that increased its territorial control threefold and placed around one million Arabs under direct control of the Israeli government. On June 11, 1967 -- a day after completing its final offensive in the Golan Heights -- Israel signed a cease-fire agreement.
In recognition of one of the greatest political and historical turning points in the Arab-Israeli conflict, the Institute for Palestine Studies is offering an article from the Journal of Palestine Studies by Tom Segev titled, "The June 1967 War and the Palestinian Refugee Problem." The article, excerpted from a chapter in Segev's book on the 1967 war, focuses on the debates within Israel, especially within the government, regarding the fate of the Palestinian refugees who came under Israeli control in the wake of the war. The article will be available from June 5-12, after which may be purchased on JSTOR.

By Ambassador James Akins
James Akins was U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia during the Nixon administration. An internationally respected expert on Middle East and energy issues, Akins has been an active and outspoken proponent for a just resolution of the Arab-Israeli conflict and a prescient analyst of the Middle East peace process and Arab politics in general. Author Jean-Jacques Servan Schreiber has called Akins "the westerner who knows the most about the Middle East and has the closest relationship of trust with its leaders."

"This is a story of how the government of the United Kingdom decided to attack an Arab nation; of how, afraid its oil supplies were under threat, it embarked on a strategy of regime change; of how Britian deliberately bypassed the United Nations, and of how a British prime minister led the nation to war based on suspect intelligence.
